davew (cincy):Anyone here have opinions on tracking the M3 versus the M5? Just wondering how they compare in fun-factor.
They are close in performance on the track as the M3 is more agile and "flickable" so better in the corners, while the M5 has more power but 1000 lbs more weight too.

Thanks Joe. That's pretty much what I expected. Obviously which car owns the better time is somewhat track dependent then too. I was hoping to get the guy's comments on "fun factor" too though, event though that is a bit subjective, of course.
In street and highway driving I found that the M5 was a superior performer, but the M3 was more fun - it "felt faster" even though it wasn't. Obviously that's related to the size and dynamics of the smaller M3 over the comfort and smoother acceleration of the M5 I guess.
What I was fishing for was, does the M5 come alive at the track thanks to the availability of the stronger performance? I was half-hoping that, similar to RC's past comments about the Turbo S, that on the track it is unleashed and the difference comes out (though I know the M5 is obviously no Turbo S).
I really like the space and comfort of the M5, and was hoping that the chance of tracking it would make it the clearly preferred car for me.
Thanks again for the reply!

Put the M5 in Sport-Plus and shut off the traction control and it comes alive alright. The default mode is very tame, and makes the car a great daily driver. The car is highly configurable with settings for shift aggressiveness, steering feel, suspension and throttle response. You can set custom preferences and save them in iDrive so that you can access them by pushing one of the two M buttons on the steering wheel. It also has MDM ( M dynamic mode) that allows you the slide the tail out more before the nannies take over.
i chose the 5 over the 3/4 for the physical size and don't regret it. The car is track capable for sure, but the 3/4 would be the better choice if tracking it is the primary goal for you. The power in the M5 is insane. It's rated by BMW at 560 hp but it's probably closer to 600 based on dyno figures some people have reported, and you can take it to almost 700 with a tune although it's not likely that the extra power would be very usable due to traction issues. Torque is over 500. It is very fun to drive. It does not feel like a 4400 pound sedan, I can tell you that much.
